Irish Wolfhounds
Irish Wolfhounds are widely considered to be the tallest dog breed. However, Great Danes also appear to contend this accolade.
With great pace and eyesight, Irish Wolfhounds are very patient, thoughtful and intelligent dogs. They are exceptionally loyal and tend to greet everyone as a friend, so may not make an ideal guard dog!
Irish Wolfhounds do not have a long life-span, with 5-9 years the average. However, they are one of the oldest dog breeds discovered - dating back possibly to the 1st century BC, and bred as war dogs by the ancient Celts.
